Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is usually triggered by a traumatic event, is defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) as one in which the person experienced, witnessed, or was confronted with an event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others. PTSD is marked by three types of symptoms: reliving the traumatic event; avoiding any reminder of the traumatic event/feeling numb; and feeling constantly on edge.
