Three Very Short Introductions have been published online this month:

  • Oceans: A Very Short Introduction, by Dorrik Stow, analyses how oceans form a key part of the biogeochemical cycles, whilst also considering their relationship with, and exploitation by, humans.
  • Pain: A Very Short Introduction, by Rob Boddice, explores the history, culture, and medical science of pain, charting the shifting meanings of pain across time and space, with the changing experience and treatment of it.
  • Utilitarianism: A Very Short Introduction, by Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek and Peter Singer, describes the nature, varieties, and justifications of utilitarianism, from its origins to arguments that draw on current research in neuroscience.
