9. ‘Eternal law’, changing times poskim (rabbis who decide the law) have drawn on traditional sources to tackle contemporary problems. This is a crucial exercise. If the Torah is indeed an ‘eternal law’ as the Orthodox claim, it must be possible to obtain guidance from it at all times and in all places. General moral principles are easy enough to derive from the Bible and Talmud, but they don’t easily yield clear answers to specific questions. Clear answers are—in theory, at least—to be found through halakha , ‘law’, the process of legal reasoning based on sources and precedents.
