The discovery of ancient manuscripts in caves near Khirbet Qumran has often been hailed as a momentous archaeological find and in the foregoing discussion I have given you an indication of just how the Dead Sea Scrolls have contributed to our understanding and knowledge of the Old Testament or the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Judaism, and early Christianity. By way of conclusion, I would like to reflect briefly on their importance: are they really the greatest manuscript discovery of the 20th century? Do they warrant such a description?
