7. Racist identities: ambivalence, contradiction, and commitment Let us begin with Kilroy-Silk, again. I expressed the judgement above that his remarks on ‘Arabs’ constituted a relatively strong form of racialization, and thereby had already entered the terrain of racism by using some of its key elements. Furthermore, his cavalier description of Arabs as inferior meant that the charge of racism has further plausibility, although I must stress that this is not the same as labelling him a racist in some absolute, definitive sense. In support of Kilroy-Silk, he and others cited the frequent appearance of British ethnic minority individuals on

1. What is a table? When I look at the world around me, I see that I am surrounded by all sorts of things. I see a table and two chairs, buildings, an aeroplane, a box of paper clips, pens, a dog, people, and a wide variety of other kinds of things. But this is a book about metaphysics, and in metaphysics we are concerned with the nature of things in very general terms. I am tempted to say, as a metaphysician, that all of these things I have listed are particular things, or groups or kinds of them. The

4. What is a change? Our concern so far has been with what there is, but in the most general terms. I know that there are tables, chairs, mobile phones, people, and giraffes, but, to put it in the abstract, we can also say that there are particulars, their properties, and sometimes parts of particulars. One cannot get much more abstract than that. However, one might also be worried that so far our thinking has been led very much by the example of the physical medium‐sized object. Certainly, we are surrounded by many things like that but we shouldn’t be

7. What is a person? were things like tables and chairs. They are lifeless and inanimate. Some particulars, on the other hand, are animals, such as cats and dogs. But people are also particulars, and it is arguable that there is something special about them. People matter so much to us. Are there metaphysical grounds for their special status? They have minds and, some think, souls or spirits. What then counts for a person to persist through time could be different from what it is for a purely physical object such as a table to persist.
