2. Oral literatures Long ago in this world there was no land but only water. Above in the Sky World a leader’s daughter lay gravely ill, but a healer dreamed the means to save her: the people must fell the tree that provided the nation’s food, then lay the girl at the foot of the tree. After they did so, however, a young man stormed forward. He said that it was wrong to destroy their food source to save their leader’s daughter, and he kicked her into the hole left by the uprooted tree. Down she fell, but she was

By 1723, the masonic foundational rules for organization had already been outlined and codified, and would last for centuries to come. Within a few decades, freemasonry had developed solid structures, from the local lodge to the regional/provincial level to the grand lodge at the national level, which in turn regulated relationships with grand lodges in other territories/countries.

2. The individual and self-cultivation in the teachings of Confucius There is a common saying among the people: “The empire, the state, and the family”: the foundation of the empire lies with the state; the foundation of the state lies with the family; the foundation of the family lies with the person. A moral vanguard of individuals is called for by Confucius and his followers. These individuals move others to proper behavior through the power of their example. Self-realization, Confucius believes, results in the self-realization of others, which, ripple-like, can result in the moral transformation of society at large. This, of course, is why the presence of a moral vanguard is so crucial to Confucian teachings—and why Confucius dedicates
