p. 674. What is a photograph?locked

  • Steve Edwards

Abstract

The story of the invention of photography is complex and surrounded by mythology. How do the basic features of the process shape our experience of photographic images? Photography did not just happen. The invention of photography was actively sought. ‘What is a photograph?’ considers the notion of the photograph in theoretical and experimental terms. We deduce from photographs a great deal of truth about the world. The process of photography, the chemical and optical trace of objects, lends support to the view that photographs are literal or objective copies. We hold a great deal of faith in the truth claim of photographs.
