p. 242. The signs and symbols of Christianitylocked

  • Linda Woodhead

Abstract

‘The signs and symbols of Christianity’ offers an overview of how Christianity examines a number of symbols and rituals (in particular sin and the notion of the saviour) and considers how these developed from the ways that Jesus was first understood and interpreted. Even though the signs, symbols, stories, and rituals adopted are generally shared under the umbrella of Christianity, they are made manifest in a variety of ways. The Western churches put more emphasis on the concept of sin than do the Eastern churches. Biblical churches are less concerned with formal ritual than other branches of Christianity. How is Jesus depicted in Christian art and how does this influence his position in Christianity?
