Philosophizing with a Hammerlocked

  • Michael Tanner

Abstract

‘Philosophizing with a Hammer’ is concerned with Nietzsche's work in 1888, the last year of his sane life, where he devoted himself to further polemics, written in a style of hard clarity which even he had never attained before. The works discussed are The Transvaluation of All Values; two anti-Wagner pamphlets: The Case of Wagner and Nietzsche Contra Wagner; The Antichrist, and the lively and witty Twilight of the Idols, which manifests the freedom of complete mastery, though it was written on the very verge of collapse. It contains Nietzsche's longest, most ardent paeon to Goethe.
