p. 645. Cosmology
- Richard Lyman Bushman
‘Cosmology’ explores Smith's account of the Creation and destiny of mankind. In his thought, Creation was more like bringing order out of chaos than making something out of nothing. Some essence of the human personality, like matter itself, has always been. God used this pre-existing intelligence to create spirit. Human beings are not God's creatures but radically free intelligences, as eternal as God himself. Mormons emphasize the moment in their spirits' history when God offered to send them to earth and they accepted. They fear they may not be valiant enough to reach the highest of three heavens, but believe that nearly everyone — even the worst sinners — will be redeemed.
