p. 545. Différancelocked

  • Simon Glendinning

‘Différance’ shows that, for Derrida, the task of the subject once called ‘philosophy’ is no longer achieving superlative conceptual clarity by rendering what we mean perfectly transparent in its identity. Rather, it is learning how to endure reflectively what we already more or less naively endure every day, indeed as our everyday itself; our inhabitation of a fundamentally ‘inscriptural space’, a text, marked by an irreducible (which is not to say simply unlimited) play within identity that Derrida will formalize in terms of a new word ‘Différance’ (with an a). Philosophy, as the desire to reduce dissemination, takes place as the impossible project to eliminate this play.
