Postmodernism has turned the art world upside down. It appears to have been a cultural upheaval on a scale not seen since the emergence of the avant-garde. ‘Past the post: whatever next?’ asks: how has postmodernim affected our understanding of modern art? This is hard to answer as the term ‘modern’ is not easy to define. How about ‘contemporary’? To be ‘modern’ is to have qualities that Western society currently values. Similarly, the reason why ‘modern art’ is a term that distinguishes the most important art of its time from other art of that period is that it shares these qualities. It is the way in which art is displayed which causes bewilderment, or even hostility, from the audience.
