p. 1Introduction: the kinds of medicinelocked

  • William Bynum

The ‘Introduction’ identifies the framework used in this book for understanding the history of medicine. It is presented through a typology of the five primary kinds of medicine, namely: bedside, library, hospital, social, and laboratory. These discrete categories represent different goals of doctors, as well as reflecting the differing sites in which they work. Although this framework allows a roughly chronological narrative, these kinds of medicine are cumulative and still resonate today.
