Abstract
Science fiction is closely associated with the future and how the past and present are seen to change. ‘Fictions of time’ examines not only fiction and film that reach into the future but also how the past has been recast in what is termed prehistoric fiction. The themes of future wars and post-nuclear societies, disasters, and alternate histories are examined to show the different currents flowing in science fiction and the way that past events, recent and ancient, are projected into the future. Constant speculation about the future is a vital source of ideas for science fiction.
