What is the legacy of Herodotus? Who was he and what do we know about him? The Introduction looks at what we know and for what he is remembered. It was Herodotus who first undertook the daunting task of sorting out myth from fact: he was the first who saw a distinction between the two. Herodotus was a master storyteller. His text is a demanding one. What should be made of his long, complex work cobbled together from oral sources of varying reliability by a man who loved telling stories? Herodotus offers us several different versions of a number of historical events. What did Herodotus think of the importance of history?
