Abstract

Civil engineering can look back on a history of finding successful solutions to all manner of problems in the infrastructure of modern society. But what of the future? ‘Civil engineering: looking forward’ offers a glimpse into the future — where civil engineers will need to bring their thinking to bear on problems such as traffic management in our towns and cities, and the need to renew our infrastructure in the most cost effective way. The importance of new tools — better analytics, sensors, and communication — allied with the development of new materials and innovative applications, perhaps in entirely new settings, such as the most hostile locations on earth and even space.
