‘Origins’ considers how bacteria, single-celled organisms known as prokaryotic cells, first emerged approximately 3.5 billion years ago, developing from a common ancestor of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Bacteria, like all cells, contain DNA and they function by the decoding of this DNA into proteins, which comprise the enzymes that control all the major ogranism processes. The first bacteria were anaerobic, then photosynthetic bacteria and cyanobacteria emerged creating oxygen allowing the development of aerobic bacteria, which then flourished about 2.5 billion years ago. The two classes of bacteria — Gram-positive and Gram-negative — are discussed along with the differences between a bacterial cell and a eukaryotic cell.
