For the vast majority of Muslims the Quran is the speech of God. ‘The Quran and the Prophet’ explains the origins and organization of the Quran and what it means. It considers the position of Muhammad in the Islamic faith. The style of the Quran is allusive and elliptical. It is addressed to people already familiar with the material it contains. The image of the Prophet in literal terms radiates through the Muslim world today. In the latter half of the 20th century, non-Muslims have come to have a much better understanding of Islam. Before the mid-20th century, Muslims were often referred to as Muhammadans.
