There are many examples in literature of playing with gender or reality. Is the narrator a woman? Are they talking from beyond the grave or is death a metaphor? ‘Difference or truth?’ considers what it means to question the difference between fact and fiction and whether doing so actually helps us to determine what is true. Is the current concentration on this question a cultural symptom? If language is differential rather than referential, if we owe our ideas of things to differences which are the effect of language in the first instance, then we can never be certain that what we say about the world in language or any other signifying system is true.
