p. 172. Scripting a life: the early yearslocked

  • Elleke Boehmer

‘Scripting a life: the early years’ discusses the issues with charting Nelson Mandela's life and examines Mandela's childhood, youth, studies in law, his early working life, his involvement with the African National Congress, and his political activities leading up to his incardination. There is an inherent difficultly in trying to narrate the life of Nelson Mandela in the second half of the 20th century. What emerges is a double-framed story: of South Africa and of Mandela-in-South-Africa. A second difficulty concerns the generic, especially allegorical, patterns through which his story tends to be narrated.
