After Newton the attention of astronomers turned to the distant stars. ‘Exploring the Universe of Stars’ looks at the challenges that faced astronomers in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries. New efforts were poured into building better telescopes and observatories. New planets were discovered and astronomers turned their attention to measuring the distance to the stars. William Herschel's telescopes allowed him to identify over 2,000 nebulae and star clusters. Each new discovery pushed back the edge of the universe. His son John was able to identify that these nebulae and clusters contained individual stars.
