p. 483. The saintslocked

  • Beth Williamson

Venerating the saints has historically been critically important to Christian worship. A great deal of Christian art features representations of saints through the ages. The Roman Catholic church continues to recognize individuals as saints and images of saints can be found throughout the world. ‘The saints’ looks at the role of saints in Christianity and how devotion to saints developed. The mechanism for formal canonization of saints began during the latter Middle Ages and thus so did the artistic depiction of saints. Painted panels were produced to be placed on the altars dedicated to saints, or on tomb-altars, which were a combination of a tomb with an associated altar.
