Abstract

Can the Renaissance be described as embodying the moment when the modern notion of ‘individuality’ and the concept of the self as an autonomous entity first became manifest? The Renaissance saw an explosion in the production of painted and sculpted portraits of recognizable individuals. ‘Portraiture and the rise of ‘Renaissance man’’ analyses portrait painting in the Renaissance and looks at how these paintings were not always a straightforward depiction of what the person ‘really’ looked like but were often ‘idealized’ versions. There is no doubt that a focus on the self and on projecting one's own image to a wider world had begun to express itself across a broad spectrum of society.
