What is a myth? It is made up of three dimensions: lore, ideology, and pleasure. Scholars have come up with many definitions of a myth. The Introduction looks at what a myth is and its appeal. What do we mean by classical? It is commonly believed to mean ‘ancient Greek and Roman’. However, within this there exists a bias. Since the Romantic movement, ancient Greece has come to stand for democracy, creativity, philosophy, and imagination, whereas Rome is known for military and practical successes. The term ‘classical’ is a value-laden term. There is a smugness about the term and its pretensions to timelessness and superiority. So an investigation of classical myth is an investigation of cultural authority.
