p. 11. The origins of writing in Egyptlocked

  • Penelope Wilson

Abstract

The Ancient Egyptian civilization started around 3500 bc and ended around 30 bc. Many of the monuments and objects of the time were covered by the pictorial sign system we call hieroglyphs. ‘The origins of writing in Egypt’ looks at where these hieroglyphs came from and how they were first formed. What are they able to tell us about how Egyptians governed their land and people, what they believed in, and what their hopes and dreams were? We don't know everything there is to know about these hieroglyphs. As more archaeological work is carried out in Egypt, more evidence on the use of writing during earlier periods might come to light.
