  • Julia Annas

Abstract

When did the ancients begin their love of wisdom, which we recognize today as philosophical? How did the tradition begin? The Greeks themselves did not think that philosophy was original to them; they thought of it as coming from sources outside of Greece, usually Eastern. ‘When did it all begin? (and what is it anyway?)’ raises the issue of what, if anything, unites the ancient philosophical traditions. Ancient philosophy has played a respected and influential role in the development of philosophy in the West. Has the Western tradition of honouring reason, inherited from the ancients, devalued the influence of other philosophical traditions in the West?
