p. 92. On Sitelocked

  • Mary Beard
  •  and John Henderson

‘On Site’ describes the nineteenth-century exploration of Greece and the connections to Rome. The rediscovery of Greece was, in a way, the rediscovery of the origins of western culture as a whole. The single most important fact about the expedition to Bassae is that it was an expedition. For centuries Classics has involved not just sitting in a library reading the literature that survives from the ancient world, or visiting museums to see neatly displayed sculpture. It has involved journeys of discovery, to find Classics and the classical world on the ground, wherever they are preserved. Lord Byron, Charles Cockerell, John Keats, Horace, and the Elgin marbles are all discussed.
