p. 11. Was Reagan a Dummy?locked

  • Gil Troy

Abstract

‘Was Reagan a dummy?’ asks whether the popular view of Reagan as unintelligent is just. Reagan was born in the Mid West, and attended Eureka College, where he discovered acting. A career in Hollywood followed where he met both his first wife, Jane Wyman, and his second, Nancy. His time in Cold War Hollywood also defined his anti–Communist sensibilities. Originally a Democrat, he realigned himself after becoming critical of their centralized approach and high taxes. He became California Governor, and eventually president. Critics sneered at his conservatism and background, and outlined his lack of ‘book smarts’. However, his people skills and charm resonated with the American people.
