As I begin writing this introduction to a very short introduction to religion in America, it’s Sunday morning and I’m sitting in a fine example of a very American institution, the breakfast diner. In an hour or so I’ll go to another very American institution, a Presbyterian church, where my wife is a minister. I’ve just finished picking up several dozen donuts and delivering them to the fellowship hall there. (I wonder how many members we’d lose if we stopped serving donuts before services!) There’s no Sunday school this morning, so I have an hour before I need to pick up our kids and get back to church with them in time for worship....
