Abstract
‘Local Landscapes’ contends that religion lives and thrives in particular places, cultures, and people and questions whether there is even such a thing as religion in general. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify certain characteristics.Religion in America is still predominantly Christian, though diversely so. It grows increasingly plural, as new cultural groups from around the world make their homes there, and as new religious movements and hybrid religious identities emerge. The constant state of change reflects larger social transformations brought on by the information revolution, globalization, consumerism, and changing social dynamics within religious communities, often involving increased opportunities for leadership by women.
