Abstract

Is it possible to put value on the achievements of Abraham Lincoln? Lincoln was described as the Great American Man and there were many ways in which he lived up to that name. The Epilogue looks at his achievements in turn. He saved the American Union. He gave the American republic cohesion. His leadership ensured the survival of a liberal democracy. He made sure that economic mobility and political equality became the joint standard by which democratic government was to be measured in the future. He managed to ensure a bond between political and moral considerations in a liberal democracy.
