p. 917. Composers and their craftlocked

  • Kathryn Kalinak

Abstract

Where do film composers come from? How do composers work when they are scoring a film? What processes do they use? How do they differ across different nations and different eras? ‘Composers and their craft’ looks at the composers of some of the most memorable and recognizable film music from the last century and sketches a picture of the personalities and processes involved. The process of composing a film score depends upon a number of factors: institutional practices; the working relationships on any given film; the power of the director and his or her interest in the music score; and the personalities of the composers.
