Since its inception at a dinner party in Glasgow shortly before World War II, the concept of isotopes has constantly been at the forefront of human endeavour. As we have seen, isotopes have been pivotal in many of the major developments of the past century. From cures for some cancers through to some of the most destructive weapons of mass destruction via understanding the very origins of our own species and Solar System to recognition of human-induced climate change, Soddy’s concept of isotopes has had a profound effect in shaping the world in which we live.
