  • Adam J. Silverstein

Abstract

‘The story’ provides an overview of the rise of Islam from the seventh to twenty first century. It begins in Arabia with Muhammad's emigration from Mecca to Medina in 622 and the creation of a new community — the ‘umma’. Then it considers the first Umayyad caliphs and moves on to the Islamic conquests of the Near East and North Africa, the Abbasid caliphs, the divisions between Sunnis and Shiites, Muslim Turks, the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals. The importance of camels for travel across the Great Arid Zone and the spread of Islamic thought through key developments such as papermaking and printing are also shown.
