The ‘Preface’ asks What is Romanticism? It is easier to ask Who were the Romantics? A list of the individuals most commonly acknowledged as Romantics follows, covering several European countries and America. What generalizations can be made about the movement? Was it one movement or several? This VSI considers Romanticism from several angles, but seeks to find commonalities from whicheverapproach it takes. The ideas, beliefs, commitments, tastes and traits shared by the Romantics are surveyed, and the question asked: Why do we agree to call these artists and thinkers ‘Romantic’ in the first place?
