Abstract

The ‘Prologue’ outlines the theme of this VSI: the remarkable environmental changes that have taken place during the Great Ice Age of the Quaternary Period. It explores the evolution of ideas and changing approaches to the study of the recent geological past; from the pioneers of the 19th century — Adam Sedgwick, Charles Darwin, William Boyd Dawkins, Louis Agassiz, and William Buckland — who first recognized that glaciers had once been much more extensive, to the pioneers of the 20th century who transformed our understanding of global climate change by extracting exquisitely detailed records from ocean sediments and ice cores.
