p. 905. The Devil todaylocked

  • Darren Oldridge

Abstract

Who believes in ‘The Devil today’? Satan retains an important role in many faith communities in the Western world. Elsewhere he survives as a key figure in popular culture. Advertisers exploit the idea of lighthearted transgression with cigarette and confectionary campaigns. Films featuring vampires, once believed to possess evil spirits, portray these creatures sympathetically, even as objects of desire. With Satan's? retreat from public life, can we assume he has disappeared? Or are we failing to recognize him as he assumes new forms? Recent terrorist attacks and satanic ritual abuse have fairly and squarely thrust the notion of evil back into our conscious.
