  • Nick Groom

Abstract

Gothic cinema is universally recognizable. It has become a worldwide phenomenon, complete with the ethos of the Gothic Revival and elements of the earlier Gothic myth, from a belief in progress based on Western democratic values to the anachronistic ideal of old England. The United States has taken this up with much enthusiasm. Gothic cinema conquered America and continues to permeate American film, novels, comics, and TV today. ‘First and last and always’ looks at the Gothic in cinema today, and finally considers Gothic fashion. Although Goth has never enjoyed mainstream success, it displays an impressive longevity and is an international industry. Goth now is a lifestyle choice and an alternative culture.
