Gothic cinema is universally recognizable. It has become a worldwide phenomenon, complete with the ethos of the Gothic Revival and elements of the earlier Gothic myth, from a belief in progress based on Western democratic values to the anachronistic ideal of old England. The United States has taken this up with much enthusiasm.
