Abstract

Real is what appears to the senses. This definition is called the Matrix definition. That something appears to our senses is not sufficient evidence for its reality, however, as hallucinations cannot be sensed by anyone else. ‘Is matter real?’ looks at four other definitions of reality: the 1984 definition (real is what appears to us as real); Johnson's definition (real is what we don't make up); the Apocalyptic definition (real is the physical objects around us that resist); and the Turtle definition (which reduces reality to the first level of matter, and does not regard all features of a world without matter as real).
