Abstract

What does it feel like to doubt the self? Some psychological conditions, lead a person to assume that they are dead or deny bodily existence. There is a paradox: how can someone be sceptical about themselves if the act of being sceptical means they exist? ‘Are persons real?’ presents four main factors involved in this discussion. Firstly, our self is inside our body yet distinct from it. Secondly, we see ourselves as unchanging and continuous. Thirdly, the self is the unifier that brings everything together. Finally, the self is an agent. The self is an artefact that arises when simple factors come together to make a complex whole.
