‘Growth, cancer, and ageing’ first considers growth, which can be due to an increase of cell proliferation, cell enlargement without division, or by accretion of extracellular material, such as bone matrix secreted by the cells. Plant growth is achieved by cell division in meristems and organ primordia, followed by irreversible cell enlargement, which achieves most of the size increase. Cancer is a major perturbation of normal cellular growth that results from certain mutations in body cells. Finally, ageing is discussed; it is the outcome of an accumulation of damage in cells with time, which eventually outstrips the ability of the body to repair itself, and so leads to the loss of essential functions.
