Why is the written evidence we have on the Spartans so scanty? The explanation could lie in the fact that the Spartans were about deeds rather than words. Their laws were deliberately unwritten. ‘Sparta’ examines what we know about these fascinating people. The Spartans organized their style of life around the demands of battle-readiness. One reason for this unique societal orientation was their decision to enslave an entire population of Greeks, and a desire to ensure that it remained not only enslaved but productively so, providing the essence of Sparta's economic infrastructure.
