The word jihad has entered contemporary discourse recently. Why? Literally, the word means ‘exertion’ or ‘struggle’. The common translation as Ȉholy war’ is inaccurate. It is a collective obligation for Muslims. ‘The two jihads’ looks at the real meaning of jihad and describes the classical doctrine and the modern interpretation. According to a well-known hadith, the Prophet distinguished between the ‘lesser’ jihad of war against the polytheists and the ‘greater’ jihad against evil. What lies in the future for Islam? Sadly, a legacy of violence remains entrenched.
