‘Rhetoric in the modern world’ examines modern rhetorical phenomena using a case study of the rhetorical history of World War II. This illustrates how rhetoric intersects with technology and ideology in the modern world. Speechmaking was an intrinsic part of the global media war that was fought alongside the military campaigns of 1939–45. It had many roles, from establishing the credibility of national leaders and the maintenance of domestic morale, to public international diplomacy, to the attempted legitimization of the Holocaust by Hitler and others. The influence of culture, institutions, and technology on rhetoric and rhetoric in US politics are also discussed.
