p. 159Epilogue

new global awarenesslocked

  • Dorrik Stow

The Epilogue explains that the use and abuse of the oceans will undoubtedly affect every individual on the planet, so that it is far too important an issue to leave in the hands of politicians alone. Already, ocean-related issues are becoming ever-more prevalent in the global media—warming seas and the El Niño effect, ocean acidification, melting of polar ice and sea-level rise, coastal pollution, and dying coral reefs. It is therefore a vital challenge for ocean scientists to ensure that the facts and issues are correctly reported to enable sensible decision-making. Developing an ocean awareness and keen global sensibility are the challenge for us all as world citizens.
