About 27 per cent of the human brain cortex is predominantly visual in function, but there are many other areas that are involved less exclusively in visual processing. ‘Seeing and the brain’ describes the complicated visual pathway and brain regions involved in processing visual information, including the structure of the primary visual area, the striate cortex (area V₁). Information flows out of V₁ through dorsal (action) and ventral (perception) pathways. Cells in the temporal lobe respond to face recognition and regions in the ventral stream respond to geometrical configurations, but what about other structures? The role of attention in using visual information and visual development in humans is explained.
