p. 666. Its achievementslocked

  • Peter Atkins

‘Its achievements’ shows how the principles and concepts outlined in the preceding chapters contribute to the modern world. It reviews chemistry’s contribution to modern materials, medicine, weapons, agriculture, and transport. It shows how chemistry has used the Earth’s natural resources, water, air, and the Sun through the processes of electrochemistry and the petrochemical industry; changed the texture and colour of the world; mitigated pain and extended life through medicinal chemistry; and provided the material infrastructure of modern life. There is also a dark side of chemistry; it has enhanced human’s ability to damage and kill, which comes at a cost of human life, but also to the environment.
